The California Academy of Sciences is thrilled to host this year's Bay Area installment of Yuri's Night at their popular Thursday NightLife event on April 9th. Yuri's Night is taking a hiatus from NASA Ames this year, but we'll still be celebrating in style from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. next Thursday. Tickets are $10 and selling fast!

Buy your tickets online: https://www.calacademy.org/event_tickets/ (be sure to select April 9)

NASA may not be hosting this year, but they're still teaming up with the Academy to put together a great lineup of science, technology, and music. Here's a sampling of what Yuri's Night 2009 has to offer:

Original electronic music on the first floor by Random Rab, Nalepa, Dr. Toast, and Cumulus.
Space ambient music and aquatic soundscapes in the aquarium by Sariah Storm, Comma, and Tinker.

Immersive and 3D visions of space:

- A spectacular 3D tour of the Moon and Mars in our Forum Theater
- Interactive exhibits about NASA programs, including SOFIA, LCROSS, NLSI, Kepler, GigaPan, and the Robotics Alliance Project
- An exhibit of From Earth to the Universe
... and more!

Tickets are on sale now for only $10, and online presale tickets will sell out soon! Only a limited number of additional tickets will be available at the door, so get yours today! Be sure to select the April 9th NightLife event!

As you may know, Yuri's night celebrates both the historic first flight of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin in April 1961 as well as the launch of the first space shuttle exactly 20 years later. Yuri's Night is a truly international undertaking, with more than 139 parties in 38 countries around the world over the course of 9 days.

Since beginning on February 12th, the Cal Academy's NightLife event has been a huge success, bringing science, music, and socializing for adults to San Francisco's newest cutting-edge cultural institution!

See you at Yuri’s Night!

Greetings groovateers...come join us this thursday as we start off '09 with the first beat church of the year. Super psyched to have two great guests for this one...Pom from the rootabreaka's in LA and Nanda our spiritual bass guru from the Cruz. Pom now part of cyphertown will be throwin' down his fresh eclectic sound bringing some of the best
beatfreakin' vibes to the church.....Nanda will be comin' in to debut some of his newest musical creations as he celebrates the release of his new EP on muti music, just out and available currently on exclusive promo release at Addictech. Nanda has once again graced us with a blessing of bass for our subwoofers with the Constant Change EP! Typically dipping into multiple influences and emerging with something broken in beats and flirting with Dubstep/Grime, Garage, Electro and Downtempo shapes, the result is something that pushes a few edges technologically and somehow retains a sense of worldliness. In Nanda’s music it’s common to catch samples of Didgeridoo, Ood and ancient chants amongst other organic instrumentation. All in tracks that have some of the most crunchy electro breaks grooves, and the result is an intense ecstatic dance experience waiting to happen. Of course Kitty D and myself will be there as always filling in the audio soundscapes to perfection. Come out and join us all for the 1st in the begining of another year of beat church bringing you nights of great music, great vibes, and good ol' dancefloor bliss! As always thanks for your continued support of the local underground cutting edge music scence we are all a part of! Don't miss church.
The music is an evocation of sustained ecstasy. It is chaotic, cacophonous, sometimes at war with itself. And it is utterly intoxicating.

The primordial sounds of a 4000-year-old rock n roll band. Bachir Attar is the rightful leader of the Master Musicians of Jajouka. WILLIAM S.
BURROUGHS, BEAT WRITER

Live Volume 1 is the first Jajouka release in 8 years & marks the triumphant return of the legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka, led since 1982 by Bachir Attar. Recorded in Lisbon on the final night of a weeklong tribute to Paul Bowles.

The Master Musicians of Jajouka were first heard by the western world on Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan At Jajouka released two years after Jones' tragic death in 1969. The music of the Master Musicians soon captivated a generation of musicians and led to seminal recordings with Ornette Coleman on 1973s Dancing In Your Head and the Joel Rubiner produced Master Musicians of Jajouka. Jajouka were introduced to a new generation in 1989, appearing on The Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album. In 1992, Jajouka released the Bill Laswell produced Apocalypse Across the Sky on Laswell's Axiom imprint.

As a solo artist, Bachir Attar has recorded and toured with including Maceo Parker, The Rolling Stones, Critters Buggin , Steve Lacey, Deborah Harry, Ornette Coleman and Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo. Attar also collaborated with highly respected improvisational artist Elliot Sharp on the album In New York and they toured together. In 1994 Bachir collaborated with The Rolling Stones for the re-release of Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan At Jajouka.

Fuck Yeah! - Santa Cruz's weekly Wednesday get-down

Santa Cruz has a new weekly! That's right. We're partying every Wednesday with resident DJs Cool Hand Luke and Sparkinzi at the Seabright Bar and Lounge. This place has seen some ups and downs over the past few years, but was bought by a new owner at the end of last year and he's dedicated to making the space friendly and inviting to all. We're bringing in some local favorites as well as notable names from the bay area and beyond.
Helping us kick off the first week is DJ Seek from Spaceship Gaia, Digg, and Sugar. The next week is Lil John on the 21st, then Chlorophil on the 28th, followed by the one and only Rick Preston on the 4th of February. More info, as well as updates on who is playing next can be found on the following page. FrigiDigits.net/fuckyeah

Bitter : Sweet Fri July 25th GAMH SF

Friday, July 25th: “Jazz Forward I”
“Jazz Forward” features artists that are boldly pushing jazz into the future, or who have incorporated jazz principles into futuristic music. NBJF 2008 proudly presents “Lipstick Jungle” themesters and critical darling Bitter:Sweet along with soundscape creators The Frequency at Great American Music Hall in an all-ages show. On the same night, ALO guitarist Dan Lebowitz Group and Stephane Wrembel Trio appear at Mojito.
· Bitter:Sweet and the Frequency @ Great American Music Hall – 850 O’Farrell St | 8pm | ALL AGES | Tickets are $20 adv. at www.gamhtickets.com

BITTER:SWEET (Los Angeles, USA)Millions of people have heard the infectious tunes of Bitter:Sweet via their debut album The Mating Game, as one of their many friends on MySpace, or in their favorite movies and TV shows. Since coming on the scene last year with their debut album, Bitter:Sweet has received a plethora of accolades from the press including The Los Angeles Times who claimed The Mating Game as “perhaps the best album of its kind since Portishead’s ‘Dummy’ was released more than a decade ago” and URB magazine who called the album, “delicious.”

Bitter:Sweet's trademark sound is an intoxicating blend of Shana Halligan's melodically sweet-and-sexy vocals paired with the duos sassy genre-bending production work. In 2000, Kiran emerged on the scene as a founding member of The Supreme Beings of Leisure. Signed to Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures, the band sold over a quarter million records worldwide. Shana is, of course, no stranger to the music industry. She has been a respected part of the Los Angeles music scene her whole life and grew-up in a household with father, Dick Halligan (Blood, Sweat & Tears). Together, Kiran and Shana have created Bitter:Sweet, one of the most seductive interpretations of retro swank and hot beats since James Bond was Sean Connery.

Over the past year, the band has received countless notable accolades. Their new single "The Bomb" from their recent album "Drama" was picked as the themesong for the new NBC show "Lipstick Jungle". They were awarded the Best Rock/Pop Album of 2006 at the Independent Music Awards. They are consistently ranked on top 20 of iTunes Electronic albums chart and in Billboard’s Top 50 Electronic albums chart. Both People and Playboy Magazine urged millions of their readers to download hot tracks off of their album. And, in their hometown, The Los Angeles Times pegged Bitter:Sweet as one of the top 10 Buzz Bands of 2006. We are honored to welcome Bitter:Sweet to the North Beach Jazz Fest to play the Great American Music Hall on Friday, July 25.

Tonight!!! July 25th, Cool Hand Luke doing a 3 hour set at Fusion!

Alright, alright - are you ready? Tonight is a special three hour set before I go to Europe. We've had an amazing response to this and it looks like this one is gonna go off. The details: I will be starting my set at 10pm and going all the way until 1am at the Fusion Lounge at 110 Pearl Alley in Downtown Santa Cruz in between Walnut and Lincoln. This event is free, that's right - no cover. It is twenty one and up, so don't forget your ID. Also the same night is a shindig over at the 418 project - maybe check out both? I know Nanda is going to play and he is one of my favorite new DJs. Consider it a pre-party for the party in Harvey West tomorrow, or M-Pyre down in Monterey, but whatever you do, get on down there and come boogie!!! Oh yeah, and I'm serious about the ceramic Portuguese roosters.

m-pyre beach burn - july 26th - monterey, ca - 10a-10p

www.mpyreburn.com

m-pyre, the monterey regional burning man group is putting together a big community-centric beach burn for July 26th

this is going to be on del monte beach, next to whart 2, the window on the bay - this is a great time to bring art, community, free expression and LEAVE NO TRACE together to show monterey what its all about

we are going to be on the beach from 10a-10p - a full day of community, dance, art, performances, fire dancing, drummers, musicians, djs, random acts of radical expression, costumes and more!!

we are requesting a 10$ donation per person to help cover permit costs, insurance costs, etc - all 10$ donations get some really groovy schwag - donations can be made by going to www.mpyreburn.com and clicking the paypal link

i know many of you are unable to make it, but for those of you that can, this is a great time to come together as a community and enjoy our surroundings and each other and have a lot of fun in the process - everyone is able to participate whether that is just showing up and bringing some food to share or installing your art project on the beach for everyone to enjoy

The Real Tuesday Weld LIVE

Wednesday July 16th, 2008 @ Café Du Nord in San Francisco, CA.

Friday July 18th @ Grand Performances in Los Angeles, CA.

During the same recording time frame as his latest opus, The London Book of the Dead, Stephen Coates aka The Real Tuesday Weld created a special side project release which he titled The End of the World.

This conceptual companion piece is an imaginary concert, which takes place in an imaginary club.

Coates himself describes the record thusly: The End of the World is a valedictory 'performance' recorded on the eve of Valentine's Day at the mysterious / mythical 'End of the World' club in London. The Band performed a set of pre-apocalyptic junkyard blues songs about, in honor of, and inspired by dreams and dreaming in a one-off set recorded especially for this release. Special guests appear and disappear as both performers and audience prepare themselves to say goodbye and to face an uncertain future realizing that only heaven knows what tomorrow will bring.

Pacifika LIVE

Sunday, July 20, 2008, @ The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA.

Monday July 21st, 2008 @ Yoshi's in San Francisco, CA.

For more info on Pacifika click here

Pacifika is the multi-talented Silvana Kane, a Peruvian born singer, and accomplished actress with a love of flamenco, electronica, and textured percussion; Adam Popowitz a Canadian bred guitarist adept at new wave, classical, and pop, and a skilled producer responsible for a catalogue that includes indie rock and Armenian folk music; and Toby Peter, a dub wise bassist born in Canada and raised in Barbados, explorer of jazz, hip-hop, Latin, metal and Caribbean grooves. Together the Vancouver based trio is making a new kind of global pop, music that nods to its diverse international influences, while forging its own unique voice. Latin tinged, marked by gently flowing melodies, deep grooves, waves of cracking percussion and the occasional burst of exhilarating guitar noise, Pacifika's comfortable, complex sound defies categories, creating soothing soundscapes held together by Kane's smooth, intimate vocals.

Our good friends at XLR8R are also celebrating their 15 Year Anniversary as part of the festivities and hosting another side room of music with some excellent media slingers. It's going to go off with a capital Oh!

Greetings!

It's that time of year again. Time for frolicking and fun in the forest. This time we're taking it up a notch and celebrating for 2 nights and 2 days. Be prepared for a camping-style adventure in one of the most epic locations we've ever come across.

Join us as we weave our sonic web through the cosmos and trees. Our musical conductors for the weekend are:

Brother
Boreta
Mozaic
LittleJohn
Digital Honey
Rob Monroy
Sayr
EPROM
Hypnotech
Ana Sia
Evinrude
Stridah
Cool Hand Luke
Mr. Projectile
Timonkey
Dave Jolley
Elias
Clay
Chlorophil
plus many more surprise guests.....

We will be posting directions to the location closer to the date... so stay tuned.

Please bring flashlights, food, water, camping gear, sturdy shoes, something to share with the altar, and anything else that will make your celebration full of happiness and laughter.

Gates will open at 8pm on Friday evening and we plan on playing music until sometime Sunday morning. This should be a very good one indeed. This is a free event, however, we will be accepting donations this time in order to pay for porta potties, generators, fuel, and other expenses.

If you would like to come earlier during the daylight to setup camp, please do so. Just keep in mind that no one will be at the gate to greet you so will have to track someone down to find an appropriate place to park & camp.

Starting from March 10th, 2008, the world has seen a heavy crackdown on Tibetans by the Chinese Authorities. Since Beijing restricted international media following the recent surge of rioters inside Tibet, the first envoy of independent journalists were allowed in only to be greeted by the desperate pleas of monks under severe repression.

Right now Tibetans are rising up globally in bold and outspoken protests against the sixty-years of illegitimate occupation of China, despite risking arrests and tortures. 2008 is a huge year for Tibetans as the world turns its spotlight on Beijing for the Olympic Games in August.

On April 9th, 2008, the Olympic Torch will pass through San Francisco, its ONLY stop in North America! Join Cyphertown and Giveback to stand in solidarity with Tibetans and help raise funding for the March to Tibet, a non-violent campaign to bring Tibetans exiled in India back to their homeland.

IRINA MIKHAILOVA Presents D’Yara with Ariane Macavoy & Gari Haggerty Saturday, December 15th

Formed by Irina Mikhailova—a former member of Kitka—D'Yara consists of five female singers who express their songs through a cappella harmony and percussion, evoking the irregular meters and haunting melodies of Eastern Europe and beyond. D'Yara's music translates into song the empowerment, creativity, and wisdom of the musical traditions of women and cultures throughout the world.

Irina Mikhailova is a cross-pollinating vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist whose warm, otherworldly songs reflect Russian, Balkan, Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Enriched by the multi-ethnic sounds that surrounded her childhood in Kazakhstan, Irina has performed with an amazing cast of musicians from around the globe, including Habib Khan (India), Hamza El Din (Nubia), Reda Darwish (Egypt), Mohammad Nejad (Iran), Glen Velez (US), and Lumin (US).

Irina plays frequently in Europe and has performed at a variety of festivals in England, Morocco, Canada, Portugal, Mexico, Japan, Greece, Germany and Switzerland. Her solo albums have received international critical acclaim and are available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, Napster and her own Web sites: www.irinamikhailova.com and www.irinasheba.com.

Ariane Levy is a gifted drummer who has studied West African percussion and dance. She has also composed and produced a number of tribal-style solo albums. Music from Ariane’s main project, Niumba, is available on Avatar Records.

Gari Haggerty has been performing traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, France, Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa for the past 20 years. Gari plays a wide range of traditional instruments, including the oud (Middle Eastern lute), violin, Turkish saz, Yayli tambor, mandocello and flute.

Maneesh the Twister presents
SURYA DUB
Uniting All Dubwize Sounds
Global Dubwize Vibes & Dread Bass Culture
Saturday December 8th 2007 @ Club Six
$5 b4 11pm at going.com

Coming off a massive Halloween Mashdown and picking up the SF Weekly Music Award for 2007 Best Club Night, Surya Dub wraps up a phenomenal inaugural year with one final bash for 2007. Surya Dub is taking November off to allow everyone to give thanks this month and will return for a special 1-off event on Dec 8th the 2nd Saturday of the month. We'll return to our normal 4th Saturday of the month with our highly anticipated 1 year anniversary celebration in January 2008.

For the Last Surya Dub of 2007, we are proud to present two rising stars and two respected veterans of the Bay Area music scene. We welcome Massive Sound International selectors Robert Rankin and Spliff Skankin who have been key figures is the local reggae community for over 25 years; also on the bill are fresh bloods DJ G (aka Genome) who has been a steady pusher of Drum’n’Bass but will be showcasing his dubstep alterego; as well as Lukeino who has also been a pillar in the DnB scene and will be giving us a sampling of his latest dubwise productions; also on the line up is guest Beatropolis vocalist and emcee Axiom MC and last but not least Surya Dub welcomes home resident MC Daddy Frank from his East coast stint.

For over 20 years DJ's Robert Rankin and Spliff Skankin have been spinnin Reggae music, in the bay area on the radio and in the clubs.

After an amazing weekend of arts, music and awareness we will get together to support the Symbiosis family in appreciation of their efforts to inspire and unite our community.

Ott (Twisted, U.K.) www.twisted.co.uk/artists/
Ott is a maverick genius sound engineering creature straight out of Lord of the Rings. One of the cave trolls maybe that ran in on a hobbit psy-trance party, ate too many inebriated hobbits and never quite got over it! He has worked with countless producers and artists over the years and is a master of psychedelic sonic sorcery. He mainly writes down-tempo stuff as you would have heard on his album 'Blumenkraft' but he has also been known to break into a trundle with a dancey Shpongle DMT Remix and more recently he has released a trance track on Unusual Suspects 2 under the name Hikimori. His second album is very nearly finished too. Coming soon on Twisted Records.

*** For Immediate Release ***

San Francisco - Neurochemists at the Center for Applied Vibes—a division of False Profit, LLC—have just announced the discovery of a new element. They are calling it, Avant.

Unlike any other element on the periodic table, Avant has no atomic mass, which places it first on the table, above hydrogen.

“We were baffled because we couldn’t see it,” said Calli Beck, Director of Intimate Observation. “But of course we couldn’t see it. It’s weightless. Avant is not observable. It’s sensational.”

Avant was discovered when several different pleasures were smashed together at high speeds in False Profit’s giant Circular Joy Collider. The company was tight-lipped about which Joys were utilized, however, every scientist I talked to appeared to have chocolate smudges on their lips and berry stains on their lab coats. There were also several empty bottles of wine strewn about the lab. And they were all humming pleasurable music rarely heard in San Francisco.

What also sets Avant apart from other newly discovered elements is that it is useful.

“I stayed up all night studying Avant, and I feel wonderful,” said Director of Chill Studies, Andrea Brooks. “It’s not anything like Einsteinium or Californium, which are highly radioactive and tend to make you groggy.”

False Profit revealed that they’ve been trying to produce this new element for several years now, but when asked what changed for them, VP of Recreational Therapy, Nevada Valentine had only this to say: “We were on the verge of discovery when a Senior Vibrational Analyst from Symbiosis Labs phoned us with a critical piece of information.”

Valentine called that critical information a “trade secret”.

No one at Symbiosis was available for comment because they are all busy tweaking their signature product, the Symbiosis Gathering—set for release on September 20-24 at their headquarters in Northern California.

The weekend before, on Saturday, September 15th at the SomArts Center in San Francisco, Avant, the newest element to the periodic table will be unveiled. False Profit reminds all investors that Avant cannot actually be seen, only experienced.

performative processes which expand the formal aesthetic and technological boundaries
of immersive installation and surround cinema.
Works presented at RML may be unfinished or in the progress of becoming proficient for global
festivals, museums or active appearance tours. Those seeking common club oriented atmospheres
with a typical bar and dance disposition won't find it at this location. RML is a unique cultural institute
for experiential engineering whose dynamic workshops provide artists and attendees alike
the opportunity to examine and redefine spatial media synthesis: the science of immersive art in 3D space.

Those wishing to attend and to meet and greet these artists, engineers and
program designers in this behind the scenes forum are encouraged to signup on the
RML subscribers list immediately as our capacity for these select preview occasions is limited.
As we are trying to gain sponsor support for these specific artworks we are asking for a suggested
donation which gets you on the invitation list and provides project support subsidy for the artist residency.

Surya Dub & Future Juju present

STATE OF BENGAL
CD Release Party for SKIP-IJ!

Friday May 18th 2007 @ supperclub
Advance tix avaialble now - virtuous.com/events/v/789222798

Join us for a special evening of Global Electronica, Dirty Breaks, Dubstep, African & Brazilian polyrhythms, Bhangra & Ragga Crunk as we celebrate the CD Release Party for world-renowned producer, musician, & dj State of Bengal, as he unleashes his long-anticipated fourth CD "SKIP-IJ." UK Asian electronic pioneer and founding member of Anokha, State of Bengal performs in support of his latest release “SKIP-IJ,” in an exclusive Bay Area appearance.

The unusual title of the album “SKIP-IJ” refers to music that is not defined by a particular period and has the ability to skip through the ages. Inspired by uniting people all over the world through the love of music, State of Bengal created an album that transcended through culture and has fused together music from all over the world to produce a new sound, showcasing elements of South Asian instrumentation, African polyrhythms, urban breakbeat culture and quirky melodies to create a unique and refreshing sound called SKIP-IJ!

State of Bengal has released works on Real World, One Little Indian, and Virgin records; and has done remixes for the likes of Bjork, Massive Attack, & collaborations with legends such as Ananda Shankar, Jolly Mukherjee, and Paban Das Baul.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to catch one of the leading global electronica producers for an intimate appearance!

With a Heavyweight line-up:
STATE OF BENGAL (Betelnut Records, Anokha, Real World)

Plus an amazing roster of talent with local trailblazers leading the cutting edge of global beats and underground dance culture including:
